I was at a Cisco hosted Bay Area Exec Conference recently and heard two of their “Futurists” speak about 5 and 10 year technology horizons and potential/expected outcomes. Below are my notes from the 10 year / Dave Evans session – which I felt worthy of sharing.
10 year view of technology and the outcomes of network advancements..
The Net Effect. Dave Evans – Presentation- Click Here
“Fire ain’t exactly what it used to be” – Yogie Bera
@DaveTheFuturist – Twitter
- 2000 – Fixed computing
- 2013 – Mobility
- Today/forward – we are entering the “Internet Things” – more things than people connected to the Internet
- 10B things connected now, soon to be 50B
- Devices shifting from typical proxy to “in you” and around you
Current Information is sequestered in its content – no good way to access..
- Pills that have stomach acid activated sensors that connect to cell phones to inform that medicine has been taken… – no more skipping your medicine – Click Here
- Slippers that indicate a fall occurred… etc.
- Cars aware of each other.
Connectivity to the cloud
- Within 10 years 100{d6f5a70bbf0a363c76b6e252c1d97c7463c17db3162d4982c3d27fd35262b223} of the populated world will have wireless.
- Within 10 years 100 Mbps to your wireless device.
- About 1.5 trillion devices could benefit from being connected – about 200 things per person
- We’ve become digital pack rats…. 1,000’s of digital pictures with intent to keep a few, good ones – but we keep all.
- CES – proliferation of 4k x 2k displays – will be the norm about a year from now… Will double soon after (video footprint growing exponentially)
- Voxels is the 3d equivalent of a pixel…
A “Zetta-storm“.. is coming. (as a perspective of data collected and available – )
Cloud…..
Mobile devices are now supercomputers – have access to unimaginable compute in the cloud.
- Universal language translation real time via cloud – on your local device
- Microsoft translator hub – original test even retained accent of speaker.
- WolframAlfa – computational knowledge – not search
- ask one question – get one, accurate answer:
- what was the population of san jose, ca in 1960
- who was the us president in 1952
- what is the speed of light
- IBM/ “Watson” – what can you do when you get just one correct result…
- Face and emotion recognition…
- We are turning to where technology will adapt to us rather than us learning and adapting to new technology .
- Dextro image recognition – finds items of interest in pictures Click Here
- Can complete suduku puzzles based on visual examination
- Eulerian video magnification – medical and other use cases –
- We can now detect heart rate, infrared/temperature – and actual Heath visually – think about your mirrors having built in sensors…
- Toyota looking at emotional recognition of drivers
- Augmented reality – mirror puts various clothes on you instead of trying them on
- Take picture of home and overlay new designs
- Google glass – in 10 Years AR contact lenses
- Gesture technology –
- Leap Motion
- The Myo – picks up electrical signals in the muscles…
- Cisco StyleMe
- Oblong’s g-speak
- Digital signage that know you… visual systems will recognize your sex, ethnicity to serve content specific to you
- TV will soon watch – will watch you to determine what your interests might be, adjust to appropriate content based on ages in audience..
- Brain-machine interfaces – prosthetics with closed loop capabilities exist today, exoskeletons may enable paralyzed humans to walk again
3D Printing
- Additive manufacturing vs. subtractive
- Rapid innovation enabling
- The “Iron Man” movies – all suites were 3D printed
- 3D Shapes can print full scale homes and will be sent to the moon to fabricate housing before we arrive.
- Boeing believes that by 2050 they will be able to print an entire plane.
- Printing dinner will also be possible – 3D printed chocolate is available today
- “Chemputer” will print drugs at your home…
- Created and working towards printing organs and skin – human liver & hearts have already been done
- Check out “shape ways“
- In one to two decades you may shop online and print the device in your home.
- The FedEx and UPS of tomorrow is the network.
- Within 10 years one third of all physicians will retire – creating a gap vs. population growth and related needs.
- Image metrics – Emily on line video – artificial human..
- Interfaces that rival human beings – this will be the first line support for medicine, legal and other
Human 2.0
- “Humans are entering a stage of self-designed evolution” – Stephen Hawking
- We could be the last of our species to die…
- Regardless of belief – humans will continue to live much longer… Born today may live to be 200-300years
- Technology is positioning health to be subjects the same curve/cycle as Moore’s law
- The 1st person to live to be 1,000 will be born in our life time.
The network is key to enabling the cloud/compute….
